The short answer: The best hair oils for 4C hair are rich sealing oils used over a water-based leave-in: Jamaican black castor, castor, olive, avocado and virgin coconut, with baobab for softness. Keep a lighter oil like jojoba for the scalp. Our Wash Day blend is built for 3C to 4C hair.

Why 4C hair needs oil differently

Tightly coiled hair makes it hard for the scalp's natural oil to travel down the strand, so lengths and ends dry out fast. Oil doesn't add moisture by itself; water does. Oil's job is to seal that water in and add slip so coils detangle with less breakage.

The best oils for 4C hair

Oil What it does Use it for
Jamaican black castor Thick, coating, cushions strands Sealing ends, edges
Castor Thick and glossy Sealing, mixing into a lighter oil
Olive Rich, softening Pre-poo, sealing
Virgin coconut Known to penetrate the strand Pre-poo before shampoo
Avocado Rich and creamy Very dry lengths
Baobab Soft, conditioning Curl definition, softness
Jojoba Light Scalp

Wash Day: our blend for 3C to 4C hair

Wash Day is olive (52.3%) and virgin coconut (26.2%), with Jamaican black castor (8.4%) for thickness and cushion, avocado (6.3%) and baobab (5.3%) for softness, and vitamin E (0.5%). It's scented with sweet orange and sandalwood at 1% combined. Use it as a pre-poo or to seal after your leave-in.

Good to know: virgin coconut firms up below 76°F. Warm the bottle in your hands if it clouds.

How to oil 4C hair: the LOC method

  1. L, liquid: start with damp hair or a water-based leave-in.
  2. O, oil: work a few drops of oil through each section to seal.
  3. C, cream: finish with a cream or butter to lock it all in.

Some coils prefer LCO (cream before oil). Try both and see which keeps your hair soft longer.

Pre-poo for less breakage

Before washing, coat dry lengths generously and leave for at least 30 minutes. Oil before shampoo cuts down on that stripped, tangled feeling. See Pre-Poo: Why Oil Your Hair Before You Shampoo.

Wearing a protective style?

Use a lighter oil on the scalp between braids or locs. Braid Season sinks in fast and leaves nothing on the style.

Build your own 4C blend

In the Custom Hair Blend, pick olive or avocado as bases, Jamaican black castor and baobab as actives, and add an essential oil if you like. The 8 oz size makes sense for weekly pre-poos.

FAQ

Is castor oil good for 4C hair?

Yes, as a sealant. It's very thick, so many people mix it with a lighter oil.

Does oil moisturize 4C hair?

Oil seals moisture in. Water or a water-based leave-in provides the moisture.

How often should I oil 4C hair?

Seal after each wash and refresh ends every few days as needed. Pre-poo once a week.
