The short answer: The best hair oil for short hair, fades and close crops is a light, dry-feeling oil that you work into the hair and scalp: jojoba, fractionated coconut (MCT), hemp seed and black seed. Two to four drops is enough. Our Clean Line blend combines all four with a quiet, woody scent.

Why short hair needs a different oil

With short hair, the scalp is part of the look. A rich oil that works on long ends just sits on a close crop and reads as greasy shine. What short hair actually needs is scalp comfort, a little softness, and a clean, matte-to-natural finish. That means light oils, used sparingly.

The best oils for short hair and fades

Oil Feel Why it works
Jojoba Light, silky Closest plant match to the scalp's own oil
Fractionated coconut Light, neutral, non-greasy Stays liquid and sinks in fast
Hemp seed Light Non-greasy, good for oily skin
Black seed Warm, peppery A classic scalp oil, used as a smaller share
Grapeseed Very light Absorbs almost instantly

Skip on short hair: castor, olive and virgin coconut leave too much shine on a close cut. Save them for longer hair or a beard you're growing out.

Clean Line: our blend for short hair

Clean Line is jojoba and fractionated coconut with black seed and hemp seed, scented with cedarwood and vetiver. It's light and dry-feeling, made for short hair, fades and close crops, worked into both hair and scalp. Prefer it unscented, or want a different scent? Build your own version in the Custom Hair Blend.

How to use oil on short hair

  1. Put 2 drops in your palm. Add a third only if your hair is very dry or coarse.
  2. Rub your palms together until they just look glossy.
  3. Press and massage into the scalp and hair with your fingertips.
  4. Wipe any extra off your hands. If you can see shine on the scalp, you used too much.

Daily use is fine at this amount. For a deeper treatment, use more oil the night before you wash.

After a fresh fade or line-up

Freshly cut skin can be tender. Skip strong essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus or lemongrass on the hairline for a day or two, and use an unscented or softly scented oil instead. If you get bumps or irritation after cuts, talk to a dermatologist.

Is your scalp dry or flaky?

Short hair makes flakes easy to spot. Before you oil, check whether it's dry scalp or dandruff in our guide to the best scalp oil for a dry, flaky scalp.
