The short answer: The best scalp oils for braids and locs are light and fast-absorbing, so they soothe the scalp without leaving residue in the style: jojoba, grapeseed, hemp seed and pumpkin seed. Apply a few drops along the parts two or three times a week. Our Braid Season blend is built from exactly these.

Why light oils matter in protective styles

You can't wash braids or locs as often, so whatever goes on the scalp stays there. Heavy oils and butters collect lint and dust, and in locs they can lead to buildup that's hard to rinse out. Light oils absorb and leave the scalp comfortable instead of coated.

The best oils for braids, locs and twists

Oil Why
Jojoba Closest plant match to your scalp's own oil
Grapeseed Very light, absorbs fast
Hemp seed Light and non-greasy
Pumpkin seed A light, nutty scalp-oil favorite
Fractionated coconut Stays liquid, neutral, rinses easily

Use sparingly on the scalp in a protective style: castor, Jamaican black castor, olive and virgin coconut. They're excellent for lengths and edges, but heavy between braids.

Braid Season: our blend for protective styles

Braid Season is jojoba and grapeseed with hemp seed and pumpkin seed, and a cool, clean scent of peppermint and tea tree. It sinks in fast and leaves nothing on the style. If peppermint is too much for your scalp, build a mint-free version in the Custom Hair Blend.

How to oil your scalp in braids or locs

  1. Use a bottle with a nozzle or dropper so oil goes on the scalp, not the braids.
  2. Apply 2 or 3 drops along each part.
  3. Massage gently with your fingertips. Don't scratch.
  4. Repeat two or three times a week, or whenever your scalp feels tight.

Itchy scalp in new braids?

Some itch in the first days is common, especially with tight styles. A cooling essential oil like peppermint at a low dose can feel soothing. If you see bumps, pain or hair pulling at the root, the style may be too tight; talk to your stylist.

Short hair or locs freshly started?

Clean Line is a dry-feeling scalp oil with jojoba, fractionated coconut, black seed and hemp seed, scented with cedarwood and vetiver.

FAQ

How often should I oil my scalp with braids?

Two to three times a week works for most people. Oil more if your scalp feels dry, less if you notice buildup.

What oil causes the least buildup in locs?

Light, fast-absorbing oils like jojoba, grapeseed and hemp seed. Avoid heavy oils and butters on the scalp.

Is peppermint oil safe for braids?

At a low dilution, yes, for most people. Keep essential oils at 1% or less and patch test first.
