Patchouli oil for hair: what it is, what it does, how we blend it
Patchouli oil is the dark, earthy leaf oil that improves with age: a deep, sweet, slightly musty scent that at a few tenths of a percent anchors a lengths oil for hours.

What it is
Steam-distilled from the dried, fermented leaves of Pogostemon cablin, the oil is mostly patchoulol with alpha-bulnesene and other sesquiterpenes, heavy molecules that evaporate slowly and round off over years in the bottle. It is amber to brown and thicker than the herb oils, with a scent people either love or do not.
How it feels on hair
At 0.5% it gives an earthy, sweet, lasting base note that softens citrus and floral oils; at 1% it is the whole scent. The blend's weight and finish are unchanged.
Who reaches for it
People who like earthy scents and long-lasting ones, and anyone building a lengths oil for thick or coily hair where a lighter oil's scent would vanish. It is not in a signature blend yet.
Where it sits in our blends
No signature blend uses patchouli yet, which makes it one for the builder: start from a blend that is close and swap it in, or build from scratch. Every blend is weighed to the gram and the recipe is printed on the label.
How to compose with it
Essential oils share at most 1% of a hair blend; the builder allows patchouli up to 1%. Keep it to the low end and pair it with sweet orange, bergamot or geranium over argan or olive with baobab and avocado.
