The short answer: Buy a ready-made hair oil if one already matches your hair type and you're happy with every ingredient in it. Choose a custom blend if you need to leave something out, want specific oils together in one bottle, or have tried several oils and know what works. Many people start ready-made, then go custom once they know their hair.

When ready-made is the right call

  • You're new to hair oil. Start simple, see how your hair responds.
  • Your hair type is well served. If a blend is made for exactly your hair, there's little to gain by building.
  • You need it today. A store shelf wins on speed.

Our Signature Blends are ready-made with fully published formulas: Wash Day for 3C to 4C hair, Fine Print for fine hair, After Color for bleached hair, Braid Season for protective styles and Clean Line for short hair.

When custom is worth it

  • You react to something. Nut oils, coconut, soy, mint or fragrance can simply be left out.
  • You've done the testing. If jojoba works on your scalp and castor on your ends, a custom blend puts both in one bottle at the ratio you want.
  • Your hair is in between. Fine but very dry, or coily with an oily scalp, are combinations off-the-shelf formulas rarely target.
  • You want to know exactly what's in it. Custom means you choose every oil.

What about quiz-based custom brands?

Some brands, like Prose, personalize through a quiz and choose the oils for you. It's custom, but the decisions are theirs. With the Amber & Oil Custom Hair Blend, you choose every oil, decide how much of the bottle your actives take, and we set safe ratios and print the formula on your label. See the full Amber & Oil vs. Prose comparison.

Is custom more expensive?

Not necessarily. Our Custom Hair Blend and Signature Blends start at the same price, $26 for 1 oz, with 4 oz and 8 oz sizes for regular use. Extra oils beyond the included amount add to the price on larger bottles.

A two-minute decision

  1. Is there a ready-made oil for your exact hair type? Try it.
  2. Does it include anything you avoid? Go custom.
  3. Have you found oils you love separately? Go custom and combine them.
