The short answer: Bleached hair does best with light-to-medium glossy oils that smooth a roughened surface: camellia (tsubaki), argan, marula and baobab. Use them as a pre-wash treatment and a few drops on damp ends. Our After Color blend combines all four.
What bleach does to hair
Lightening opens the hair's outer layer to reach its pigment. Afterwards, strands are more porous: they soak up water fast, lose it fast, tangle easily and look dull because the surface no longer reflects light evenly. Bleached hair usually behaves like high-porosity hair. Our porosity guide explains why that matters.
The best oils for bleached hair
| Oil | Why it helps | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Camellia (tsubaki) | Classic gloss oil, smooths the surface | Light to medium |
| Argan | Shine and frizz control | Medium |
| Marula | Softening, absorbs fast | Light |
| Baobab | Conditioning, adds softness | Medium |
| Squalane | Weightless smoothness for fine blondes | Very light |
| Virgin coconut | Known to penetrate the strand; good pre-wash | Rich |
After Color: our blend for bleached and colored hair
After Color uses camellia and argan for shine, marula and baobab for a smoother, softer finish, with a fresh floral scent of neroli and geranium. It's made for hair that has been bleached, highlighted, colored or heat-styled. If your hair is fine and blonde, Fine Print may feel lighter.
A routine for bleached hair
- Before washing: coat dry lengths with oil and leave for 30 minutes or overnight. Bleached hair tangles less in the shower when it's been oiled first.
- After washing: apply your leave-in conditioner, then 2 to 4 drops of oil on damp ends.
- Before heat: use a dedicated heat protectant. Plant oils are not heat protectants.
- Weekly: a deep conditioner or bond treatment, recommended by your colorist.
What oil can't do
Oil softens, smooths and adds shine. It can't rebuild the bonds broken by bleach. If your hair stretches and snaps when wet, ask your colorist about a bond-building treatment and pair it with oil for softness. We compare the two in Natural Alternatives to Olaplex No. 7.
Build your own
In the Custom Hair Blend, choose camellia and argan as bases, marula and baobab as actives, and skip essential oils for an unscented finish.
FAQ
Can I oil my hair right after bleaching?
Ask your colorist, but most people can oil lengths after the first wash post-lightening.
Does oil turn blonde hair yellow?
Clear, light oils like camellia, squalane and jojoba are unlikely to. Deeply colored oils like sea buckthorn can stain light hair.
Is coconut oil good for bleached hair?
It works well as a pre-wash treatment, but it can feel heavy left in.
