Jojoba oil for hair: what it is, what it does, how we blend it

Jojoba is the base oil we reach for most: a liquid wax that feels closest to the scalp's own oil, light enough to lead a scalp blend and stable enough to keep for years.

What it is

Pressed from a desert shrub's seed, jojoba is not a true oil but a liquid wax: about 97% wax esters, straight chains of fatty acids joined to fatty alcohols. That shape is why it barely oxidises and stays clear and thin in a cool room, unlike grapeseed or rosehip.

How it feels on hair

Weight 1 of 4, light. It spreads thin and dries down to a soft, almost dry finish rather than a slick: no film on the scalp, no weight on lengths. It has almost no scent of its own, so the essential oil you add is what you smell.

Who reaches for it

People oiling the scalp between washes, fine or straight hair that goes flat under richer oils, and braid, loc and twist wearers who want the parts oiled without residue on the style. It is the usual first base for a rosemary scalp oil.

How to compose with it

As a base oil it can take most of the bottle: the builder allows it up to 85% of a hair blend. Lead with it for a scalp oil, add a richer second base if your lengths are dry. It pairs with every active and every essential oil.
