Root Note: rosemary oil for hair, 1% rosemary, weighed to the gram

Rosemary: two rosemary sprigs, beside a small glass dish of the oil.

Root Note is our rosemary oil for hair: a scalp blend that carries rosemary at exactly 1% of the bottle, weighed as one gram in a 4 oz, over jojoba with pumpkin seed and black seed, and it is made after you order it.

The recipe, percent by weight

Four oils and vitamin E. 108.6 grams in a 4 oz bottle; the 1 oz and 8 oz keep the same ratios.

Oil Share Grams, 4 oz
Jojoba 78.5% 85.4 g
Pumpkin Seed 10% 10.8 g
Black Seed 10% 10.8 g
Rosemary 1% 1 g
Vitamin E 0.5% 0.6 g

Ingredients: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil, Nigella Sativa Seed Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Tocopherol.

Why these shares

Most rosemary hair oils on the shelf do not say how much rosemary is in them. Ours is 1%, the usual upper end for an essential oil in a leave-on scalp oil, and the builder lets you set it to 0.5% if you prefer a quieter scent. The other 99% is the part you feel: jojoba at 78.5% because it is a light liquid wax that sinks into the scalp without a film and keeps for years; pumpkin seed and black seed at 10% each as the actives, one green and nutty, one dark and peppery, both with enough body to carry rosemary's sharp, green scent; and vitamin E at 0.5%, which goes in every blend to slow oxidation.

How it feels

Light. It spreads thin from the dropper, settles into the scalp within minutes and leaves no residue on a style, so it works under braids, locs and twists as well as on loose hair. The scent is rosemary first, then a warm, peppery background from the black seed, fading over an hour or two. It does not change how your hair looks; it is a scalp oil, not a shine oil.

How to use it

Part the hair and put a drop or two straight onto the scalp along each part, then massage it in with your fingertips. Two or three times a week is plenty; a 1 oz dropper bottle is about 600 drops. Keep it away from the eyes, and patch test before first use. If you want it on the lengths too, add a drop to your palms and smooth it over the ends.
