Rosemary oil for hair: what it is, what it does, how we blend it

Rosemary: two rosemary sprigs, beside a small glass dish of the oil.

Rosemary oil is the most searched-for ingredient in hair oiling, and in a bottle it is one percent of the whole: the herb's sharp, green essential oil carried in jojoba, pumpkin seed and black seed in our Root Note blend.

Role Essential oil, fresh herbal family
On the label Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil
In our blends Root Note 1%
Builder limit Up to 1% of a hair blend (all essential oils together: 1%)

What it is

Steam-distilled from the leaves of Rosmarinus officinalis, the oil is mostly 1,8-cineole, camphor and alpha-pinene, in shares that vary by where the plant grew. It is clear, thin and volatile: it evaporates, which is why you smell it, and why it is never used neat. In a hair oil it is a scent and a character, measured in half-grams, and the carrier oils are the bottle.

How it feels on hair

There is no weight class for an essential oil; at 1% it changes nothing about how the blend feels and everything about how it smells. Rosemary reads as fresh, green and slightly camphor-like, the herb on a cutting board, and it fades over an hour or two to a faint cleanness.

Who reaches for it

People looking for a rosemary scalp oil who want to know exactly how much rosemary is in it. Root Note carries it at 1%, the usual upper end for a scalp oil, over jojoba with pumpkin seed and black seed; the builder lets you set it lower.

Where it sits in our blends

Root Note carries rosemary at 1% (with Jojoba 78.5%, Pumpkin Seed 10%, Black Seed 10%). Open it in the builder, change any oil, name it and we weigh it for you.

How to compose with it

Essential oils share at most 1% of a hair blend between them, and the builder allows rosemary up to 1% on its own. It leads a scalp oil over jojoba or grapeseed with pumpkin seed and black seed; it also sits well with peppermint, tea tree or cedarwood as a second note.

Good to know: Strong oil. Keep it away from the eyes; the builder keeps the total under 1%.
